With the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch taking place this month, Wren Wildlife and Conservation Group member Tim Harris highlights some of the avian surprises that could turn up in the local area.

The RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch takes place between 27 and 29 January. It's the world's biggest survey of birds, with 500,000 people participating in 2017. Taking part is simple: choose a good place to watch from for an hour and count each and every bird you see. If you don't have a garden, that's not a problem: just pop down to your local park or green space and join in there. Record what you see on the Big Garden Birdwatch website. Here are some surprises that could turn up anywhere in the local area – including your back garden.
