As landlord of a newly opened Wanstead pub, Frank Lampard Sr has already stepped in to help his local community by sponsoring Snaresbrook FC. Millicent Brown speaks to the former West Ham star.

Former soccer star Frank Lampard Sr, who recently bought and revamped Nightingale on the Green, made a donation to Snaresbrook FC which allowed the team to buy a new kit plus some fitness equipment to help during training sessions on the picturesque Nutter Field.

Frank, who played for both West Ham and England during his football career, found his passion for soccer meant becoming involved with his local amateur team was an offer he simply could not refuse.

Nightingale on the Green opened in July and Frank has spent almost three months getting to know his regular customers and helping to get the pub up and running – and judging by the number of people now drinking and eating there, he is doing a fabulous job.

Frank told me: "I have had a brilliant time getting Nightingale on the Green started and when I heard there was a local football team in need of my support, it was another opportunity I couldn't miss. Now, it is simply great when the boys come down to the pub following their twice-weekly training sessions and, unbeknownst to them, I have even wandered down and watched them kicking a ball around on Nutter Field! They all seem really nice guys and I look forward to meeting them all properly over the coming months. The team haven't had a home match yet so I haven't been able to see them play down the road but that is something I am intending to do as soon as possible."

Snaresbrook FC, located at the ground in Nutter Lane since 1948, launched a brand new youth team back in 1998 and the fact so many are now playing for the adult team proves their solidarity and loyalty to the club.

This season, the team are playing in Senior Division One of the Essex Olympian Football League, winning their first official match 4–1. Amazingly, two players – Josh Woodcock and Drew Barbier – who have been with Snaresbrook since playing for the under-10s participated, with Drew scoring a goal. They've since won their first league game 1–0.

New team manager Rob Caine, who started with Snaresbrook under-8s and played into adulthood until injury, said: "The pub's sponsorship has enabled us to purchase a brand new kit for the 2018/19 season. But more than that, Frank's generosity has also funded some much-needed fitness equipment, which will help move the club in the right direction. Our thanks go to Frank, his manageress Debbie and their team for all their hospitality... We all enjoy going into the pub and love the atmosphere, so much so that one of our players now just can't stay out of there!"
