Residents are invited to get a first look at the design proposals for the new Wanstead swimming pool, leisure facilities and high school improvements at a drop-in event on 30 July from 2pm to 8pm at Wanstead Library.

The new swimming pool, which is one of the council's commitments, will be located inside Wanstead High School.

As well as a new community pool, plans include:

  • improved leisure facilities
  • a dance studio
  • improved teaching environment at Wanstead school
  • improved disabled access for leisure and school

A full 12-week public consultation will begin in late summer to give people the opportunity to comment on the planning application, and subject to planning advice designs may be revised. It is estimated that works on site will begin later in the year.

Leader of the council, Councillor Jas Athwal, said: "We're quickly progressing this much-anticipated election promise to give residents in the west of the borough first-class swimming facilities that are within easy reach. Once completed, this new pool, improved school and leisure facilities will encourage more people to take part in a physical activity to better their own health and I'm keen to showcase these early proposals. It's important that residents views are considered on the pool and improvement works to the school and leisure facilities and a full consultation is being launched to ensure we gather the views of the community and deliver the best facilities for them."
