Eight-year-old Wanstead resident Diya Mehta was inspired by the parks, forests and nature trails around her home to write and illustrate this magical adventure
One sunny day, Lilly told her mum that she wanted to have a picnic in the woods. Her mum said: “You can go, but don’t get your dress tangled up in the bramble bush.” So, off she went through the woods, when suddenly, she heard someone singing a joyful tune.
The sound was coming from the toadstools. She looked at them curiously. There were little windows on them and a tiny door where some fairies flew out.
One fairy saw Lilly and stopped. She said: “Hi, my name is Ani. You are awfully big. Would you like to become a fairy like me?” Lilly said excitedly: “Yes please, Ani.” She made Lilly shrink using her magical wand and gave her a pair of wings and a wand too.
Lilly and Ani soared into the air and slid down the sparkly rainbow. They had great fun together.
They flew and flew, but they flew so high that they got trapped in a spider’s poisonous cobweb. It was a trap!
Luckily, Ani’s wand could turn into anything. She made her wand into a pair of golden scissors. Even Lilly’s wand turned into a pair of silver scissors. They started to cut the web. But it was too sticky!
Just then, Lilly had a plan. She said they could make water come from their wands. “You are a genius!” said Ani. They tried it and the cobweb washed away. It worked! They were free!
They started flying happily, but then they heard their stomachs grumbling loudly. Fortunately, Lilly had brought a picnic.
Lilly opened the picnic basket and there were delicious mouthwatering cupcakes, cheese and cucumber sandwiches and juice. After finishing the picnic, Lilly had to go home. So, Ani made her grow back to her normal size. Lilly said goodbye to Ani and went back home feeling excited to tell her mum about her day. She could not believe it had happened.
That night, Lilly slept well, knowing that she’d had the best day ever, but also excited that Ani let her keep her wand, which she kept safely under her bed for any future adventure she may face.
