New book charts the history of aerial adventures on Wanstead Flats

WVD-AUG-2026-fly

A new book has been published charting the vast array of flying activities that have taken place on Wanstead Flats over the last two centuries.

“Many were purely recreational, from pigeon flying – the sport was actually launched on the Flats – to paragliding and model aircraft flying. But there have been more serious reasons for taking to the sky, including the bombing raids of two world wars. And then there are the utterly bizarre, such as Colonel Cody’s man-bearing kite,” said the authors.

The book is priced £6 and available from:

  • Emporium 8, Sebert Rd, E7

  • V&A books and gifts (Highams Park Bookshop) 2A The Avenue E4
