Controversial Woodbine Place redevelopment gets planning approval

Woodbine Place redevelopment proposals

A controversial plan to demolish a row of single-storey shops at 12–15 Woodbine Place has been approved by Redbridge Council’s Planning Committee.

The 100-year-old site – home to Best Turkish Kebab, Wanstead Hairdressers and Bambini – is now set to be replaced by a three-storey development with four ground-floor commercial units and office space above.

“I have operated children’s clothing shop Bambini since 2003. The neighbouring family barbers has served the community for more than 60 years. These are not temporary businesses… We are not against sensible investment. We are just asking for development that respects Wanstead’s character,” said Karren Wardle. All three Wanstead Village councillors, who are not members of the Planning Committee, have expressed disappointment over the decision. The site is within the Wanstead Village Conservation Area and has locally listed status.
