Chimes restored: what happened to the hour strike at St Mary’s?

Repairs were made to St Mary’s last month to restore the church bell chimes.

“The link rods that connect the bell hammers under the cupola had corroded, and this caused the hour strike to fall silent. All of the links were replaced, and the chimes and hour strike were restored,” said a spokesperson for the Parish of Wanstead.

Located on Overton Drive, St Mary’s Church was built in 1790 without any clock in the tower. In 1899, a new clock and four bells were installed by Smith of Derby, who still maintain it to this day.
